Five Tokyo Parks Still Worth Hiding In

For the players who haven’t quit. A short field guide.

The seekers always say the same thing — “there’s nowhere left to hide.” They’re not entirely wrong. Most public play spaces in Tokyo are smaller, softer, more visible than they used to be. Cameras everywhere, signs that say no balls, no shouting, no this. But hide-and-seek doesn’t need permission. It needs a tree, a corner, a long enough sight line. These five parks still have all three.

1. Yoyogi Park / 代々木公園

Yoyogi Park

The default. Big, open, sprawling, with enough trees on the perimeter to disappear inside if you commit. Best around late afternoon when the light gets long and the joggers thin out.

Hiding score: 7/10 · Nearest: Harajuku / Yoyogi-Koen · Best for: 5+ players, golden hour

2. Inokashira Park / 井の頭恩賜公園

Inokashira Park

The pond does most of the work. There’s a wooded section beyond the swans where the paths narrow and the visibility drops. It’s also the only park on this list where you can briefly become a duck.

Hiding score: 8/10 · Nearest: Kichijoji · Best for: Slow seekers, weekday afternoons

3. Komazawa Olympic Park / 駒沢オリンピック公園

Komazawa Olympic Park

The main loop is too open. Skip it. The good zones are the side trails between the gymnasium and the green spaces — concrete corners, hedges, side stairwells, equipment that nobody is using. Built for sport, retrofitted for evasion.

Hiding score: 6/10 · Nearest: Komazawa-Daigaku · Best for: Athletic seekers, post-rain

4. Rinshi-no-Mori Park / 林試の森公園

Rinshi-no-Mori Park

The locals’ secret. Originally a forestry research forest, it kept the old-growth feel that most Tokyo parks lost decades ago. Tall trees, narrow paths, real shade. Bring quiet shoes.

Hiding score: 9/10 · Nearest: Musashi-Koyama · Best for: Veterans, weekends without kids’ events

5. Showa Memorial Park / 昭和記念公園

Showa Memorial Park

The boss level. 165 hectares is too big for a regular game — the seeker will find someone, just not always before sundown. Pick a 1km square, draw your circle, agree on a time limit. Pack snacks.

Hiding score: 10/10 · Nearest: Tachikawa · Best for: Full-day games, expeditions

Honorable mentions: Hibiya, Mizumoto, the small park behind your station that we won’t name. The point isn’t the rank. The point is that the parks are still there. Go.
